The Internet and the World Wide Web have transformed delivery systems and methodologies in education through online learning. Responding to an increasing demand for greater accountability in higher education, student engagement has become a prominent and acceptable assessment of collegiate quality. A modified version of the NSSE instrument that evaluates on-campus engagement is used to measure student engagement in online learning. The study details the level of engagement against key engagement benchmarks, uncovers a number of distinctive engagement patterns in sub-groups, and discusses the relationship of the student s level of satisfaction with the entire educational experience.
